At ten years old, Kelly and I were two rambunctious boys who carved our initials into a tree in the forest. We promised to be best friends forever and bumped our fists to seal the deal. I never should've kissed him that summer before college. It was a day that buried me in shame, a day I spent the next twenty-four years regretting, a day I never told anyone about.
At forty-three, depression was suffocating me. Not even my wife and two children could lift the heavy fog. I was riddled with guilt and self-hatred, and I was starting to realize that I would slowly fade away until nothing remained. Then one day, Kelly was back in town.
(All novels taking place in Camassia Cove are standalone.)

I can't find a single reason to not give this book a full five stars. It's extremely well written. Perfectly paced with well developed main and side characters. Its set up as a second chance love story. But I can't, in good conscience, call this a romance book. If anything, it's an 'end of romance' story.
Lucky for us HEA fanatics, it also has a new beginning romance.
The story focuses on a character afflicted with severe depression. I thought it was well done showing both sides of the disease. We felt the direct effects on the MC as well as the side effects to those around him.
Depression was invisible. There was no tumor to remove. There was no surgery. You drowned, you lived in a fog, you cracked under the constant fear of failure.
In spite of the heavy topic, I didn't find it too difficult to read. Both MCs came across as victims of circumstance. It was hard to hate either of them. The wife was an absolute saint. I adored every one of the kids.
So, like I said, I can't find a single reason to not give this a full five stars. Truly excellent writing.

When Forever Ended edition by Cara Dee Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
This story did a great job of showing us the horrible effects of severe depression. The main character, Will has spent years fighting it. The story doesn't treat the subject lightly but in the end Will has found love and some peace. Well written story with heart!
Will and Kelly. Depression is a very serious illness that most of us know little about or we are not exposed to the factors involved. William had depression to extremes. This is a story about finding himself and his best friend and trying to find balance in his life. Very well developed and written. Applauds to Cara Dee.
I've bought this one right after finishing Home because I couldn't seem to get enough of this author's writing style. It's addictive! I have a new crush!
Great writing, broken men and pretty hot scenes. I loved the dual POV, I loved both main characters.
I can't wait to read more by Cara Dee!!
This book was a heavy read. The main focus was on depression and the debilitating effects it has on a person's life. the cause of the main character's depression was his self-loathing (because of his homosexuality) and his longing for his first love (more precisely, his soulmate). He felt trapped in a world where he would never be happy and therefore those people around him wouldn't be, either. Like I said, it was a heavy storyline. But, the author brought light and hope into the book with the addition of other strong characters and the promise of future happiness. However, there were a few cliffhangers in this story and no apparent sequels to provide resolution! What was the true nature of Brady and Matt's friendship? What was Lissa's connection to William's brother? What was the purpose of mentioning the overnight stay in the city and then titillating the reader with a veiled marriage proposal? ("Now I only needed him to promise me that forever in front of this crazy family of ours.") This book felt like it was several chapters short of being complete. I really liked this book, but felt severely shortchanged without the loose ends being tied up at the end.
This was a difficult read but easy to relate to since I've fought depression all my life. William and Kelly parted on bad terms at 18, after growing up together for years. They also grew up in a time and era when being gay or bi, like William, was far less understood or accepted than even now. Kelly moved away and suppressed his sexuality for a long time, also fathering a son. He never forgot William, who also never forgot him. William married and had two children. Lissa, his wife, was a very well written character, exhibiting very natural feeling reactions to events in the book. She was not perfect, got a little bitchy but was ultimately an empathetic figure.
While depression is a disease without cause, outside events can influence and accelerate episodes. William's depressive episodes made his sadness in losing Kelly into an overwhelming feeling every time he went down the spiral. Kelly returns after 24 years during a bad episode but it becomes a catalyst for William to work harder to get better. Kelly also suffered with depression, so he understands. The story covers the events of their reunion and the trouble and difficulties that they both face. Yes, there is a cheating episode. I thought it appropriate to the story, it's handled appropriately and I thought it completely understandable. It's a real thing that happens in real life sometimes.
While the story has the usual great storytelling from Cara Dee, my reservations come from my own feelings toward the book. The subject made the story rather bleak reading at times. I struggled at times with much of the first part of the book, as I couldn't envision exactly where the book was heading. There was too much going on with each of them separately, as the POV switched with each chapter. It did progress better in the second half and the characters did get woven together well by the end.
The next book involves more MF and I'll be skipping that one but I'll hope for future installments with MM relationship focus.
4.5 Stars
What a fabulous and refreshing MM romance. I love Adult romance and here the two main characters Will and Kelly are in their forties struggling with real and relatable topics such as depression, sexuality and coming out. Not only to oneself but to the people closest to them.
I loved the honesty and authenticity of the story. The story took its time to let the characters unfold and I really appreciate that. It made me feel invested in the story and with Will and Kelly. There’s no denying that these two men have history. They’ve known one another since they were kids and parted on horrible and sad terms. Their way back to each other and Will dealing with himself was flawlessly depicted. I loved the secondary characters too.
This was my first book from Cara Dee and I couldn’t have chosen a better one. Incredible story.
